Cardinals place rookie RB Jeremiyah Love on IR with a high-ankle sprain

Arizona made the move official Tuesday, and the rookie is expected to miss four to five weeks. Tyler Allgeier takes over the backfield starting with this week's game in Seattle.

  • The Arizona Cardinals placed rookie running back Jeremiyah Love on injured reserve Tuesday with a high-ankle sprain. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said early Tuesday afternoon that the move was coming and that the injury should keep Love out four to five weeks, and the team made it official a couple of hours later.

  • What's confirmed

Arizona placed Love and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne on injured reserve and promoted wide receiver Harrison Wallace III from the practice squad to the active roster. The NFL transaction log on ESPN lists the moves, and RotoWire also logged the official placement Tuesday. A stint on IR means Love misses at least four games, starting with this week's trip to Seattle.

Love picked up a new ankle injury in Sunday's win over Dallas. That is separate from the earlier ankle sprain that cost the first-round pick time before he returned to practice in late October.

    What's still an estimate

The four-to-five-week timeline comes from Rapoport's sources, not from the team. High-ankle sprains can linger, and this is Love's second ankle injury this season. Plan around the back end of that range rather than the front.

  • Who gets the work

Tyler Allgeier is the clear beneficiary. Rapoport pointed out that Allgeier ran for 147 yards and a touchdown in a game Love missed earlier this season. Arizona is also changing quarterbacks, with Gardner Minshew II named the starter for the Seattle game, so expect the early weeks of this stretch to look a little different for the whole offense.

What RSO owners should do now

If you roster Love, move him to an IR slot if your league has one and hold. A first-round rookie on a cheap multi-year deal is not a cut candidate over a month-long injury, and selling now means selling at his lowest point.

If Allgeier is on your roster, he moves into your starting lineup conversation for the next month. If he's a free agent or sitting on a rebuilding team, check his contract and make an offer before his next big game sets the price.

    What to watch next

Watch Arizona's Wednesday and Thursday practice reports for Allgeier's status and for who fills the RB2 role behind him. After that, watch for Love to return to practice, which would open his 21-day window to come off IR.
