Bears list Kyle Monangai questionable after Friday practice return

Brad Biggs and Underdog NFL both logged his first workout since the Oct. 4 turf toe. Chicago still has not cleared him for Sunday night against Tampa Bay.

  • Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai practiced in a limited role Friday for the first time since his turf toe injury against the New York Jets on Oct. 4, and the club listed him questionable for Sunday Night Football against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Chicago Tribune reporter Brad Biggs and Underdog NFL both reported the return to drills, and the official Week 9 injury report confirmed limited participation with a questionable game status.

  • What is confirmed

Monangai (thumb/toe) was a non-participant Wednesday and Thursday, then limited Friday. Biggs wrote that Friday was his first practice since the Jets game and called it a positive sign for a return after Chicago's Week 10 bye. Adam Jahns also logged him back at practice and questionable for Sunday night. NFL.com's Friday roundup carried the same questionable designation.

That is an upgrade from four straight inactive weeks (Packers, Falcons, Patriots, Seahawks). It is not a clearance to play. Questionable means the Bears have not ruled him out, and beat reporting still leans toward a cautious ramp rather than a full Sunday workload.

    How the backfield looks

D'Andre Swift has carried the lead role while Monangai sat. RotoWire noted Swift's recent form and warned that even if Monangai suits up, a normal 16-touch share is unlikely after one limited day. Roschon Johnson remains the other healthy back on the 53. Ben Johnson said Friday that Monangai is "getting better" and that toe injuries can be fickle, per CHGO Bears, without promising a Sunday return.

Cornerbacks Malik Muhammad (toe) and Tyrique Stevenson (thumb) are also questionable after limited Friday work. Left tackle Theo Benedet cleared to full, per Biggs.

What RSO owners should do now

Treat Monangai as a soft stash, not an automatic Week 9 start. Prefer Swift in every format that needs a Bears running back Sunday night. If you roster Monangai, keep him for the post-bye stretch unless inactives confirm another sit. Do not burn a high waiver claim solely on Friday's limited session.

  • Managers who have been streaming the Chicago committee should stay with Swift until Monangai posts a full practice week or a clear active designation. A surprise active tag would still likely mean a limited share behind Swift.

    What to watch next

Sunday's inactive list before the 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff. Biggs and the Bears channels usually settle the call then. A fifth straight inactive keeps the post-bye return timeline intact. An active listing would reopen flex consideration in deeper leagues only.
