Raiders weigh starting Fernando Mendoza over Kirk Cousins after loss

  • Raiders coach Klint Kubiak said after Sunday's 35-21 loss to the Rams that the team is evaluating everything, and that includes starting No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza over Kirk Cousins. Kubiak's postgame comments ran through Underdog NFL, and ESPN wrote up the same position Monday morning.

  • Kubiak said the Raiders are "thinking about everything," naming personnel and scheme, plus their red-zone and third-quarter problems. He did not name a Week 8 starter. A switch is on the table, and nobody has announced one.

For RSO owners, Mendoza is worth acting on now. If you roster him, keep him. If he is cheap on someone else's taxi squad or bench, ask the price before Las Vegas names a starter. Cousins holders should treat him as a short-term piece at best.

Sunday's other news that matters for rosters:

Seattle beat Kansas City 20-3 on Sunday night, and Rashid Shaheed did not return after a knee injury. Running back Velus Jones Jr. also left with a hamstring injury. Kansas City never reached the red zone, the first time that has happened in any Patrick Mahomes start. Minnesota is now the league's only unbeaten team.

Jaylen Waddle left Denver's 30-16 win over Arizona. He was first listed with an arm issue, and Underdog later called it a chest injury. No timeline yet.

  • Christian McCaffrey left Atlanta's 29-20 win over San Francisco with a thigh injury, then came back in. Aaron Jones Sr. hurt his knee late in Minnesota's 16-10 win over Indianapolis and did not get another carry.

Cam Skattebo said he felt his hamstring on his last carry of the Giants' overtime win at Houston, and the Giants have a bye in Week 8. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Jaylin Noel has turf toe and is wearing a boot.

In Carolina, coach Dave Canales said right tackle Taylor Moton has a fractured fibula and is out indefinitely. Losing him thins Carolina's line after a 43-13 loss to Tampa Bay. Breece Hall missed a third straight game for the Jets.

What to watch next: Monday injury reports and MRI results on Shaheed, Waddle, Jones and Skattebo, and whether Las Vegas names Mendoza this week. Dallas plays at Philadelphia on Monday night at 8:15 PM ET on ESPN and ABC, and Saquon Barkley carried a questionable tag for his hamstring on the final injury report. Set lineups with that late kickoff in mind.
