The Bears just told every contender to spend its rookie picks
Chicago sent its 2027 and 2028 first-round picks to Tennessee for Jeffery Simmons. Vic Castellano says RSO contenders should copy the Bears and trade their own picks for proven starters now.

The Bears just showed you how to run a contender, and most of you are going to ignore it. Chicago is 5-2, it needed a pass rush, and it sent its 2027 and 2028 first-round picks plus a fourth to Tennessee for Jeffery Simmons. If you're sitting near the top of your RSO league clutching next year's rookie picks like they're family heirlooms, stop. Spend them.
I know the counterargument because I hear it in every league chat I'm in. Picks come on cheap contracts, and they're how you stay good for five years instead of one. Fine. ESPN Research says Simmons is the first defensive tackle since 1967 to be traded for more than one first, so even the Bears paid a price nobody's paid before. And Chicago took on his three-year, $105.8 million extension with $100 million guaranteed, per ESPN. That's real money and real risk for a 29-year-old. If it goes sideways, people will be writing about it in 2028 when Tennessee is making those picks.
I still don't care, because the Bears knew exactly what was wrong with them. ESPN has their four-man rush at a 25% pressure rate over the past two seasons, fourth lowest in the league. Simmons leads every defensive tackle in pass rush win rate this year at 27%. He was first-team All-Pro last season with 11 sacks. They went and got the one thing their roster couldn't do, from a team sitting at 1-6, and they did it while their window is open instead of hoping a draft pick turns into him in three years.
That's the trade you should be making in your league this week. Your rookie pick is a lottery ticket with a cheap contract stapled to it. The proven starter on a 2-5 team is a known number, and his owner is staring at the standings wondering why he's paying him. You've got leverage right now that you won't have in March, when every rebuilding manager in your league suddenly remembers how much they love the draft.
Flip it around if you're the Titans in this story. If you're 1-6 in your league, take the picks and say thank you. Tennessee just turned one great player into two extra firsts. Your version of that is the veteran your league's contender can't live without. Sell him to the guy who's panicking about a playoff bye.
Will some of you spend a first on a starter who gets hurt in Week 12? Probably. That's the risk, and I'll own it. I'd still rather lose a pick chasing a title than finish fourth with a drawer full of picks I was too nervous to use. So send the offer tonight, before the manager in second place reads about the same trade and beats you to the 2-5 team's best player.
