Brandon Aiyuk is worth a one-year flier right now, and not a dollar more

Brandon Aiyuk filed for reinstatement and plans to report to the 49ers Friday, with a release looking likely. Nora Pike says bid short and cheap now, because the price climbs the day he finds a team.

  • If Brandon Aiyuk is sitting in your free-agent pool, bid on him today. Keep it to one season and a salary you'll have forgotten about by Thanksgiving. Anything longer and you're paying for a player nobody has seen take a snap in more than a year.

Here's where it stands Wednesday. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Aiyuk filed for reinstatement and will report to the 49ers' facility Friday afternoon, and that he's "healthy and ready to get back on the field." Once he reports, San Francisco can keep him, release him or trade him before Tuesday's deadline. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network expects a release, and ESPN's Nick Wagoner calls a release more likely than a trade.

That's the window. Right now nobody in your league knows where he'll play, how long it takes him to get game-ready, or whether anyone wants him at all. All of that doubt is baked into his price this week. The day he signs somewhere with a clear role, the doubt goes away and so does the discount.

The case against him is strong, and I won't pretend otherwise. He hasn't played since Oct. 20, 2024, when he tore the ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee against Kansas City. In July 2025 the 49ers voided roughly $27 million in guaranteed money because, per ESPN, he didn't complete required rehab sessions and check-ins. In September, Kyle Shanahan said no when asked whether Aiyuk was an option for a banged-up receiver room. The 49ers have tried to trade him before and couldn't. If you pass on him for all of that, I won't argue with you.

I'd still bid, because a one-year flier doesn't need him to be the 2023 player. That version caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns and made second-team All-Pro, and he's only 28. You aren't paying for that guy. You're paying a bench spot for the chance that a team with a need hands him real snaps in December. Keep the football question and the contract question apart. The football question is wide open. The contract question is easy, because a short deal at a small salary leaves almost nothing behind if you cut him in January.

If you already own him, don't sell this week. Every buyer in your league knows the risk, so every offer you get will be priced for the worst case. Wait for him to have a team.

  • One more thing. He's hinted he'd like to play in Washington with Jayden Daniels, his old Arizona State teammate, and plenty of managers have already pictured it. The Commanders have since added Stefon Diggs. If your bid only makes sense with Aiyuk in burgundy, cut it in half.

And if he lands with a contender next week and catches a touchdown in his first game back, somebody in your league will offer you a multiyear starter's worth of value for him. That's the day I'd sell.
