Kenneth Walker III rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns, carrying the Kansas City Chiefs to a 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Kansas City improved to 5-0 while its divisional opponent fell to 0-6.
Walker scored on a 33-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard run late in the second. Those were the game's only touchdowns. The Chargers reached threatening field position several times but finished with two Cameron Dicker field goals.
Patrick Mahomes threw for 272 yards. Xavier Worthy caught seven passes for 73 yards, and Travis Kelce added five receptions for 53 as Kansas City built a 19-3 halftime lead.
Walker gives Kansas City room
Harrison Butker opened the scoring with a 44-yard field goal before Walker broke loose for his first touchdown. Butker missed the extra point, leaving the Chiefs ahead 9-0.
Dicker answered from 23 yards. Los Angeles later kept Kansas City from adding a touchdown when Cam Hart intercepted Mahomes in the end zone.
The Chargers' official video shows Hart ending that scoring opportunity:
The stop did not produce a sustained offensive response. Walker scored again with 1:49 remaining in the first half, and Butker connected from 50 yards with two seconds left to send Kansas City into the break up 16 points.
The Chiefs entered without injured receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton. Walker's production gave the offense a reliable way to move the ball while Worthy and Kelce handled much of the receiving work.
Chargers cannot finish a short field
Quentin Johnston's 57-yard reception gave Los Angeles a major opening early in the third quarter. A holding penalty pushed the Chargers back, and the drive ended with Dicker's 30-yard field goal rather than a touchdown.
The Chargers also recovered a fumbled punt return after a replay reversal. That extra possession did not turn into points. Kansas City continued to protect its lead while its offense played through missed opportunities of its own.
A late turnover closed another Los Angeles drive. L'Jarius Sneed forced KeAndre Lambert-Smith to fumble after a short Justin Herbert completion, and Drue Tranquill recovered for Kansas City.
The Chiefs' official clip captures the defensive finish:
Butker's 30-yard field goal with 3:52 remaining provided the final points. Herbert finished with 204 passing yards and an interception, and the Chargers managed 259 total yards.
Los Angeles lost Ladd McConkey to a concussion in the second quarter. Deane Leonard also left with a concussion. The Chargers had entered without Joe Alt, Kayode Awosika, Tre' Harris, Derwin James, Donte Jackson and Bud Dupree.
Kansas City left tackle Jaylon Moore was ruled out with a concussion. Kelce returned after an ankle issue. Chiefs defensive back Chris Roland-Wallace was ejected following a fourth-quarter altercation.
The Chiefs visit Seattle next Sunday night. The Chargers enter their bye before facing the Rams in Week 8.
