Swift and Monangai miss Bears practice before Sunday's game at Green Bay

Chicago's top two running backs sat out Wednesday after an 89-snap win over the Jets, and Ben Johnson calls Monangai's thumb no concern. Thursday's practice report is the next checkpoint before Friday's game designations.

  • Chicago Bears running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai both missed practice Wednesday, October 7, as the team started preparing for Sunday's 1 PM ET game at Green Bay. The Bears' official injury report lists Swift as a non-participant with hip and knee injuries and Monangai with thumb and toe injuries.

Coach Ben Johnson told reporters Monangai's thumb is no concern and that he was sore from the game, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Before practice, Johnson said the staff had a long conversation about how to handle this week and that things would be "a little bit different" after the offense ran 89 snaps against the Jets. Neither back has a game designation yet. Those arrive with Friday's report.

  • The workload explains some of the caution. Monangai carried 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 23-12 win over New York. Swift added 15 carries for 58 yards and caught two passes for 16 more. Roschon Johnson was the only other running back with a carry, finishing with four for 16 yards. NBC Chicago noted that Swift has appeared on the injury report often this season but has played in all four games.

The rest of the offense is banged up too. Guards Joe Thuney (pectoral) and Jonah Jackson (ankle) and right tackle Darnell Wright (ankle) also missed practice, and none of the three received a rest designation. Caleb Williams (hamstring) remains out, and Chicago has already said Tyson Bagent will start again.

For RSO owners, one missed Wednesday after a heavy game is not a reason to bench Swift or Monangai or to shop either one. Keep both in your lineup plans, but if you start one of them, have a fallback ready in case he sits again Thursday. Monangai's 30 carries showed how much work this offense will give one back when it can. If either one is ruled out Friday, the other becomes a higher-volume start, and Roschon Johnson becomes worth a look for owners with an open roster spot. Thursday's report this afternoon is the next checkpoint.
