DeMeco Ryans will call Houston's defensive plays beginning with Sunday's visit to Tennessee. The Texans' head coach announced the change Wednesday, October 7, taking the responsibility from defensive coordinator Matt Burke after an 0-4 start. Ryans tied the decision to communication problems and the team's inability to close games.
At the official Wednesday news conference, Ryans said communication begins with him and that assuming the calls would let him address it directly. He praised Burke's work and said the defense would continue its existing approach. The confirmed change is responsibility for delivering the calls; Houston has announced no accompanying replacement of its defensive personnel.
The recent results explain why the club is trying a change now. Kristie Rieken reported for The Associated Press that Houston had a late fourth-quarter lead in three of its first four games before allowing the decisive score. The defense has yielded 343.75 yards and 27.25 points per game, compared with 277.2 yards and 17.3 points in 2025. Its current passing allowance is 260 yards per game, 28th in the league.
Those totals separate two questions for roster evaluation. The Texans retain the players who produced last season's defense, while this year's performance has given opponents more scoring opportunities. A coach taking over calls may change how the unit communicates in important situations. It supplies no measured improvement yet, and last year's results cannot resolve what the defense will do under this week's arrangement.
Ryans was asked whether using his voice would make a difference. He said the team would see, describing the move as an attempt to spark a change. His answer leaves the outcome open. Houston's first game with the revised responsibility will provide the next evidence on whether the defense can execute late possessions more effectively.
Will Anderson Jr., speaking at the same media session, placed responsibility on the players as well. He described the different intensity Ryans brings when leading the room and emphasized holding one another accountable. That adds the players' view of the transition without establishing a new coverage package or promising more sacks, interceptions or fantasy points.
For RSO managers evaluating opponents of Houston, the immediate adjustment is to note a change in who directs the defense while continuing to use current availability and actual game results. The announcement gives no reason to assign a different workload to an opposing receiver or running back. Houston visits the also-winless Titans on Sunday in Week 5, where both teams will try to record their first victory.
