The change comes one day after Monday night's 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills at SoFi Stadium. Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal attempt wide left in the first quarter, then had a 48-yard try blocked in overtime that would have won the game. Tyler Bass won it for Buffalo with a 45-yard field goal later in the extra period.
Sean McVay said after the game that the Rams would "evaluate everything" about the kicking unit. "In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal, not even close to good enough," he said. "It cost us the game tonight."
Mevis was 5-for-9 on field goal attempts this season, according to ESPN. The Rams have had three field goal attempts blocked since the start of last season, tied for the most in the league over that stretch.
Grupe was claimed off waivers by the Jets after rosters were cut to 53. He never kicked for them and was moved to their practice squad. He opened the 2025 season with the New Orleans Saints and went 18 of 26 on field goals before he was let go, then signed with the Indianapolis Colts and made all 11 of his attempts there. Rams special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone also has Colts history, though the two were not in Indianapolis at the same time.
What is confirmed: the Rams are moving from Mevis to Grupe, per sources who spoke to NFL Network, with ESPN carrying the same account. What is still open: the formal roster transaction, and how quickly Grupe settles in with the holder and snapper before Week 6.
