Carolina placed Xavier Legette on injured reserve Saturday, extending the wide receiver's absence beyond Sunday night's game against Detroit. The Panthers also announced that left tackle Monroe Freeling cleared concussion protocol and is cleared to play, removing another uncertainty from an offense still waiting on Jalen Coker.

Legette must miss at least four games, according to the team's announcement. He hurt his knee against Atlanta in Week 2 after a 55-yard reception and did not play against Cleveland last week. Friday's report had already ruled him out against the Lions; Saturday's transaction confirms a longer roster absence.

Coker remains questionable with a quadriceps injury. He returned to limited practice Friday, participating in individual and team work, but Carolina said his condition would continue to be evaluated over the weekend. The Legette transaction does not change Coker's designation or establish that he will play.

Carolina elevated rookie receiver Ja'seem Reed from the practice squad for the first time this season. The team's other available receiver options include Tetairoa McMillan, John Metchie III, David Moore and Brycen Tremayne. Reed's elevation adds an option for Sunday while Legette is unavailable and Coker's status remains unsettled.

Freeling's clearance is a separate positive development for the offensive line. The rookie had been questionable while progressing through concussion protocol. Carolina's Saturday announcement says he has now completed that process and can play against Detroit. That changes the tackle's status from the uncertainty carried on Friday's report.

  • The Panthers also elevated cornerback Robert Rochell for the first time this season. Their secondary lost Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson to injured reserve Wednesday. Carolina identifies Akayleb Evans and Will Lee III as its starting cornerbacks, with Chau Smith-Wade also on the active roster. Rochell gives that depleted group another game-day option.

Josh Alper's independent report confirmed Legette's move to IR and Carolina's receiver shortage. The immediate roster decisions are now clearer: Legette is unavailable for a multi-game stretch, Freeling is cleared, and Reed and Rochell have been added through standard elevations. Coker remains the unresolved availability decision in the receiver group.

  • Earlier reporting retained; Saturday status above supersedes earlier availability

Jalen Coker is questionable for Carolina's Sunday night game against Detroit after a second straight limited practice Friday with a quadriceps injury. The Panthers ruled wide receiver Xavier Legette out with a knee injury and left guard Damien Lewis out with an elbow injury.

Carolina's final report also lists defensive tackles Cam Jackson (knee) and Lee Hunter (foot) as questionable after limited practices. Rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling practiced fully Friday but remains questionable while he completes the concussion protocol.

Coach Dave Canales said Freeling still had clearance steps to pass. If he cannot play, veteran Stone Forsythe is the alternative at right tackle. Corey Bullock will start for Lewis at left guard, according to the team's Friday report.

For managers considering Coker, Friday supplies a formal designation rather than a promise that he will play. His game falls in the Sunday night window, so a decision made at the inactive announcement would leave fewer replacement games available.

The other players on Carolina's practice report carry no game designation, the team said. Coker's limited work this week followed his quadriceps injury in the loss to Cleveland.

Wednesday, September 30: Horn and Jackson placed on injured reserve

The Panthers placed both starting cornerbacks, Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, on injured reserve Wednesday. Each must miss at least the next four games, giving Carolina a firm availability decision after the injuries they suffered in Sunday's loss to Cleveland.

Horn has a quad injury and Jackson a groin injury. Horn had been seeking another medical opinion after coach Dave Canales described his injury as significant. Jackson's timetable had remained uncertain. Wednesday's roster moves establish the minimum game absence for both without promising when either will return.

Carolina now has to replace both starting boundary cornerbacks before hosting Detroit on Sunday night. Rookie Will Lee, Chau Smith-Wade and Akayleb Evans are among the remaining options. The Panthers also signed veteran Robert Rochell to the practice squad. A practice-squad addition provides another option; it does not by itself place Rochell on the active game-day roster.

The team promoted wide receiver David Moore and running back Anthony Tyus III from the practice squad as part of Wednesday's moves. Moore adds receiving depth with Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette dealing with injuries. Tyus joins the active running-back group after making his NFL debut against Cleveland.

The cornerback moves are the clearest change from the initial postgame report. Horn and Jackson are no longer simply awaiting a Week 4 designation: injured reserve rules them out for at least four games. Carolina's remaining injured players still require their own practice and game-status decisions.

Replacing two starters at once also makes the coming secondary assignments consequential. The Panthers have available players and have added practice-squad depth, but the final combination against Detroit has not been fully announced. Their bye after Week 4 will not eliminate the minimum four-game absence attached to Wednesday's injured-reserve placements.
