Lamar Jackson misses Ravens practice as ankle clouds Sunday night start

Baltimore's quarterback sat out Wednesday with the ankle he hurt against Tennessee, and coach Jesse Minter says Jackson can play without a full week of practice. Thursday's participation report is the next signal before the game in Atlanta.

  • Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson did not practice Wednesday, October 7, because of the left ankle he hurt late in the first half of Sunday's 24-18 win over Tennessee. The team's official Week 5 injury report lists him as a non-participant ahead of Sunday night's game at Atlanta.

Coach Jesse Minter did not rule him out. "There is a lot of time between now and Sunday," Minter said, adding that Jackson is getting a lot of treatment and that the staff will "figure out kind of where it is at" later in the week. Asked how late the call could go, Minter said a player with Jackson's experience can play without a full week of practice.

Outside reporting points in two directions. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Monday that Jackson has a sprained ankle that gives him only an outside chance to play, and that he could miss more than one game depending on rehab, though the injury is not considered long-term or surgical. ESPN's Adam Schefter said Wednesday there is still a realistic chance Jackson plays. On Thursday morning, Rapoport added that whether Jackson practices today will go a long way toward deciding Sunday.

  • Jackson completed 15 of 20 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns before he left Sunday's game. Tyler Huntley went 8 of 9 for 63 yards in relief and would start if Jackson can't. Minter said the offense would not have to change much with Huntley, and Mark Andrews and Zay Flowers both said the group trusts him.

Jackson's top targets are at least practicing. Flowers (foot) and Rashod Bateman (shoulder) were limited Wednesday, and Andrews (hand) practiced fully. New center Cam Jurgens is in the concussion protocol, and Minter expects him to be ready next week rather than Sunday.

For RSO owners, plan for a Huntley start until Baltimore says otherwise. If Jackson is your starter in a superflex or two-quarterback league, add or line up a backup now, because Sunday night inactives arrive after the afternoon games have kicked off. There is no reason to sell him, since the reporting describes a sprain that is not considered long-term. Thursday's participation report this afternoon is the next real signal, followed by Friday's game designation.
