Giants reportedly create $1.68 million in cap room through Golston restructure

The salary conversion shifts part of the charge into 2027 while the defensive lineman’s neck-injury status remains unresolved.

  • The Giants have created additional salary-cap room by changing how Chauncey Golston’s existing pay is charged. Spotrac reported Tuesday that New York converted $3.36 million of the defensive lineman’s salary into a bonus, freeing $1.68 million under the 2026 cap.

Spotrac put the Giants’ available room at about $11.5 million entering Week 5. The conversion is a contract-accounting move, not a newly reported extension or an announcement that Golston has changed jobs on the defense.

  • Giants Wire’s Dan Benton reported that Golston signed a three-year, $18 million contract in March 2025, with $12 million guaranteed and a $4.5 million signing bonus. His 2026 base salary was already fully guaranteed. Converting part of that salary into bonus money spreads its cap charge across the remaining years without changing the cash owed to him.

That produces room now and a larger charge later. Half of the $3.36 million remains allocated to 2026, while half moves to 2027, the final year of the deal. The $1.68 million gain therefore comes from timing the cap expense, rather than reducing Golston’s compensation.

The move arrives while his availability is unresolved. Golston left Sunday’s victory over Arizona with a neck injury and did not return. The Giants’ official Week 5 tracker included him among three players who exited the game, alongside receiver Braxton Berrios and safety Jason Pinnock. A restructure does not establish that an injured player has been cleared to practice or play.

Golston has appeared in all four games this season, with two starts and 12 tackles, according to the team’s current player page. New York signed the former Dallas third-round pick in March 2025 after four seasons with the Cowboys.

  • For RSO managers, the contract news provides context for New York’s roster flexibility. Golston’s immediate playing value still depends on his injury status and defensive workload. Tuesday’s accounting adjustment supplies no new return date and does not promise a replacement signing.
