Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams said Thursday that Tyler Goodson can help take snaps off Javonte Williams as Dallas tries to revive its running game before Sunday night’s trip to Green Bay.
Adams said he had discussed Goodson’s role with Williams on Wednesday. Some assignments suit Goodson’s strengths, he said, and the Cowboys need another back who can relieve Williams. Adams also described an offense that has struggled to stay balanced because its running game has not been effective, Patrik Walker reported for the team Thursday evening.
Dak Prescott said establishing the run would help Dallas sustain its offense across four quarters. CeeDee Lamb said the offense needs to capitalize when its defense gets stops and give the team more chances to play with a lead. The Cowboys enter the Green Bay game at 2-3.
Tuesday’s roster moves
The Cowboys re-signed Emari Demercado to their active roster Tuesday, restoring a running back they waived last week to make room for Tyler Smith’s return.
Dallas also signed guard Nick Leverett to the practice squad and released cornerback Alex Austin from that unit, the team’s public-relations account announced. Demercado’s move is to the 53-man roster; Leverett’s is to the practice squad.
Demercado has appeared in two games for Dallas this season, carrying five times for 15 yards. The Cowboys’ Oct. 8 update confirmed those totals when they waived him as the corresponding move for Smith’s activation.
The return gives Dallas another option alongside Javonte Williams and Tyler Goodson as it prepares for Sunday night at Green Bay. Dallas has not announced a different role for Demercado since his return.
Leverett’s move follows Dallas releasing him from the active roster Monday. ESPN’s Todd Archer reported earlier Tuesday that the opened roster spot was intended for Demercado, with Leverett expected to join the practice squad. The team’s announcement confirmed both moves later in the day.
Demercado played at TCU before entering the NFL with Arizona in 2023. Dallas claimed him after Kansas City let him go before this season. Tuesday’s move brings a familiar player back into the running back room as the Cowboys prepare for the Packers.
