Commanders plan to rule out Croskey-Merritt for Monday night at 49ers

Washington's lead back missed every practice this week with a groin injury and is expected to sit in Week 6. Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler are next in line, and both are managing injuries of their own.

  • Washington running back Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt is expected to miss Monday night's game at San Francisco with a groin injury. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said Saturday the Commanders plan to rule him out, and The Athletic's Ben Standig had the same news minutes earlier.

  • Here is what is confirmed. Croskey-Merritt did not practice Thursday or Friday, and he was not seen during the media portion of Saturday's practice. RotoWire listed him as questionable after Friday's session. The official ruling should come on Washington's final injury report ahead of the Monday game.

The groin issue is not new. Standig noted he has dealt with it since training camp, and he still played last Sunday against the Giants, posting 11 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown on a 36 percent snap share. Missing every practice this week turned a nagging problem into a lost game.

That puts the Week 6 backfield in the hands of Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler. White practiced fully Thursday, then was limited Friday with a shoulder issue, the same injury that cost him a game in Week 4. Ekeler has been working in a non-contact jersey with a chest injury. Jeremy McNichols is still on injured reserve, so Washington has little healthy depth behind those two.

For RSO owners, this is a one-week hit for now, not a change in Croskey-Merritt's long-term value. Nobody has said he is headed to injured reserve. His contract value holds as long as the groin stays a short-term problem.

What RSO owners should do now: move Croskey-Merritt out of your Week 6 lineup before Sunday's games lock, since you will not get a better answer by Monday. White is the first pivot if he is on your roster or on waivers, and Ekeler is a usable pass-down piece in deeper formats. Do not cut or trade Croskey-Merritt at a discount over one missed game.

  • What to watch next: Washington's final injury report for White's shoulder and Ekeler's chest, and whether Croskey-Merritt returns to practice next week. A second straight week of missed practices would raise the risk that this lingers into the back half of October.
