Sean Tucker made his three offensive snaps count against Green Bay. Now Todd Bowles wants Tampa Bay to find more work for him, a development worth watching before Thursday’s game in Dallas without treating it as a guaranteed change of lead back.
The Buccaneers’ official Tuesday report put the Week 4 distribution at 37 snaps for Bucky Irving, 27 for Kenny Gainwell and three for Tucker. Tucker carried on all three of his plays, gaining 10 yards and scoring a two-yard touchdown during Tampa Bay’s 17–14 loss. His eight-yard gain on fourth-and-one kept that possession alive.
Bowles said the team needed a way to divide work among its three backs, while making clear that it did not have to be equal. His preference was to let a productive runner stay involved longer. Wednesday’s official game preview also quoted offensive coordinator Zac Robinson saying the staff needed to get Tucker going more.
Those comments concern opportunity. They do not announce a new starting order or a fixed number of touches against Dallas. The team report still described Irving as the likely lead back while healthy; he rushed for 61 yards against Green Bay.
Gainwell’s 27 snaps also deserve attention. He received three handoffs and caught the touchdown pass that ended Tampa Bay’s other scoring drive. A snap total can include blocking, routes or a two-back formation rather than a rushing attempt. The Bucs used Irving and Gainwell together on the game’s opening play.
NFL.com’s Wednesday matchup analysis noted that Tampa Bay rushed for a season-high 141 yards against Green Bay and now faces a Cowboys defense allowing the league’s second-most rushing yards. That matchup adds context to the workload discussion without deciding which back receives it.
For an RSO owner, the next check is whether Tucker’s short-yardage contribution becomes sustained usage. A touchdown on three snaps can matter in a weekly lineup, but it does not establish a dependable volume floor. Bowles’ stated interest gives owners a reason to inspect the next game’s carries, routes and goal-line assignments.
That evidence should inform any waiver or trade valuation alongside the owner’s existing contracts and league scoring. It supplies no basis for assuming Irving’s job has changed hands. Tampa Bay visits Dallas on October 8 at 8:15 p.m. Eastern.
