Bosa out for Seattle as 49ers weigh Williams return

Nick Bosa will miss Sunday's game in Seattle, but the 49ers could have Mykel Williams available for the first time this season. San Francisco ruled Bosa out Friday with knee and calf injuries and listed Williams as questionable after he completed a full practice.

Williams began the season on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from last year's ACL injury. The 49ers said he is expected to be activated before the Seahawks game. That expectation still needs a roster move and a final availability decision; the Friday designation is questionable.

San Francisco also ruled out defensive lineman James Thompson Jr., fullback Kyle Juszczyk and safety Marques Sigle. Cornerback Upton Stout is questionable. Mike Evans practiced on a limited basis Friday and carries no game designation, giving the passing offense a different availability picture from the defensive front.

Bosa offered a more encouraging outlook for the games after Seattle. Niners Wire reported Friday that he described a return against Washington in Week 6 as “pretty darn likely,” citing NBC Sports reporter Matt Maiocco. That is Bosa's assessment of his recovery, not medical clearance or a confirmed return date.

The immediate task for the unbeaten 49ers is a division game without Bosa. Williams' possible return would add an option on the defensive line, though coach Kyle Shanahan said the team rotates its players and would assess how Williams responds in his first game back.

Sunday's inactive list will settle the remaining availability decisions. Bosa and the other three players ruled out Friday will remain unavailable regardless of Williams' status.

    Earlier reporting

The following section preserves the previously published report. Its injury statuses and roster decisions describe the dates cited below.

Nick Bosa's calf injury has left San Francisco with a roster decision as well as an empty place on Sunday's defensive front. The 49ers' final report rules him out against Arizona. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Bosa could miss around a few weeks, while the club was still discussing whether to place him on injured reserve. The report did not announce an IR transaction or a firm return date.

For a general manager, that distinction matters. Keeping an unavailable player on the active roster preserves flexibility if he recovers sooner but consumes a spot that could be used to reinforce the line. An IR move opens an active roster place while bringing return timing and designation limits into play. NFL.com's September 26 analysis reports that the 49ers must choose which injured players receive the club's eight in-season return designations. The article describes Bosa and receiver Demarcus Robinson as live decisions, not completed moves.

The choice lands amid several connected absences. San Francisco also ruled out defensive linemen Romello Height, who had hand surgery, and James Thompson Jr., who has an ankle injury. Robinson, with an ankle injury, is out at receiver. The team's report says Bosa was hurt during individual warmups before Thursday's practice. Shanahan described the line's losses as unusual for the team; his official video briefing addresses the injuries and Sunday matchup.

The roster problem is therefore wider than one pass rusher. A replacement must cover Sunday's snaps against the Cardinals, while the front office decides which recoveries justify carrying a player on the 53-man roster and which need a reserve-list place. NFL.com's analysis identifies Khalid Kareem and Keion White as likely edge options without Bosa, but the 49ers have not used the injury report to announce a final snap plan.

For RSO managers tracking roster construction, the next hard evidence is San Francisco's transaction list, followed by Sunday's inactive list. Bosa is confirmed out for this game. His IR status and the cost to the team's future return options should stay provisional until the club makes the move.
